Eena Meena Deeka

Eena Meena Deeka

While digging through some tapes and DVD's, I came across this copy of an old Bollywood song, Eeena Meena Deeka. This particular video came to me many years ago from my friend, Danny McGough, who made a copy of one of our band's shows on a VHS tape. "Eena Meena Deeka" was already on the tape along with the better known "Jaan Pehechan Ho." I was immediately smitten by its sweet and goofy style and have been a fan of Bollywood ever since.

The choreography doesn't compare with modern Bollywood dance numbers, but it's high on the corn factor and has lots of imagination. The guy in this video reminds me of Tito Larriva. I'd love to see Tito and Jane Wiedlin remake this song.

If you like this video, you might be interested in checking out some more. I've selected some of my very favorite Bollywood musical clips to share with you, and you can check them all out by visiting my YouTube page. Here, you'll find a playlist of videos that I especially like along with some of my comments.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I like to buy my videos in Artesia. I usually take half the day and visit the India Restaurant in the Ziba Beauty Complex for their all-you-can-eat buffet. After I'm completely stuffed, I walk off my lunch by checking out the little shops on Pioneer Blvd. Bangle Baazar and Raaga are two good sources for Bollywood videos. Cottage Arts is good for clothing accessories, and home decorating goods.

Maybe it's coincidence or some strange fate to find this Bollywood clip on your weblog because I was discussing romantic Bollywood movies in my summer school P.E. course only yesterday. (Just so you know, I didn't fail P.E., we're all getting ahead.) Also, my dad's coworker invited our family to his wedding in India. My dad tells me he used to have a Chicano girlfriend but she spent too much of his money (hahah) and he's having a traditional arranged marriage now. I'll have an authentic Indian summer!

Hi Alice,

It's good to read about your interest in Bollywood movies. For your reference, the song you referred to, called "Eena Meena Deeka" is an Indian classic, which remains popular to this day. It was shot for the film, Asha.

The man who you see dancing and singing in the video is Kishore Kumar, who remains the only entertainer in Indian film history to have mastered several disciplines - singer, actor, director, producer, composer. His inspiration apparently was Danny Kaye.

Though he died in 1987, Kishore Kumar still remains popular with music lovers the world over.
